Getting in front of the camera can feel a little nerve-wracking—but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re booking a family session, couples photos, or a lifestyle newborn shoot, a little preparation goes a long way. In this guide, you’ll find 4 practical session tips for your photography session to feel confident, relaxed, and fully present during your session—so your photos reflect you and the story you’re telling. Let’s make the experience effortless, enjoyable, and unforgettable.
What you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel. Go for outfits that reflect your personality and feel comfortable (yes, comfort shows up in photos!). Stick to neutral tones, earthy shades, or soft textures to keep the focus on you and the connection you share—not loud patterns or logos. I go over this and so much more in my wardrobe guide PDF, when you book a session with me, I send this along with a Pinterest board for some extra visualization over!
Quick Outfit Tips:
Bring a backup outfit, just in case.
Coordinate without matching.
Avoid neon colors and large brand logos.
Add layers or accessories for visual interest.
The small things matter. Here are a few often-overlooked details that can make your session smooth:
Get plenty of rest the night before.
Eat beforehand so you’re not hangry.
Bring water, bug spray, snacks for kids, and makeup touch-up items if needed.
Leave early to avoid stress (especially for locations that are a drive).
The best sessions happen when you’re present, not perfect. You don’t need to “perform”—you just need to be you. I’ll guide you with movement and prompts so you’re never left wondering what to do. Focus on your connection, how you want to remember this chapter in your life, and the small things that really are big (little toes, soft glances, toddler cuddles) That’s where the magic lives.
Come with an open heart and a flexible mindset. Trust that everything doesn’t need to be posed or perfect for your photos to be beautiful. Your only job is to show up and let your love, laughter, and personality shine.
Don’t be afraid to reach out with any last-minute questions! I’m here to help guide you every step of the way—whether it’s outfit help or location scouting for something that trulty feels like you. The more prepared you feel, the more relaxed and confident you’ll be on session day.
Whether it’s your first photo session or your tenth, preparation is key—but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning, a lot of heart, and a photographer you trust, your session will feel like a celebration of your story.
